Varias de las películas que aún no han tenido su vuelta de calificación requerida en Los Ángeles. Los documentales presentados deben cumplir con los requisitos de estrenos en cines y cumplir con todas las demás normas de clasificación de la categoría antes de que puedan avanzar en el proceso de votación. Una lista de 15 películas se darán a conocer en diciembre.
Los largometrajes presentados en la categoría de película documental también pueden clasificarse para otras categorías de los premios de la Academia, incluyendo el de Mejor Película, siempre que cumplan los requisitos para esas categorías.
Las nominaciones a los 87º Premios de la Academia se anunciarán en vivo y en directo el Jueves, 15 de enero 2015, a las 14:30 (hora española) en Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
La gala de los Óscar se celebrará el Domingo, 22 de febrero del 2015, en el Dolby Theatre® en el Hollywood & Highland Center® en Hollywood, y será televisada en vivo por la cadena de televisión ABC. La presentación de Oscar también será retransmitida en vivo en más de 225 países y territorios en todo el mundo.
